I would recommend going to the Pilot2ATC site and watching the training videos. The program is very versitile and I feel well worth the money. You can just take off without ATC and then while flying you can contact approach at an airport and request radar vectors for an approach and landing. You can take off and request to remain in the pattern to do practice landings. With Pilot2ATC you can just use the moving map during flight and get aircraft advisories, or you can file a flight plan and do the whole ATC thing. it doesn't descend you into mountains like 124th ATC does, although nothings perfect. While 124atc is free (I've tried it and it works OK but has driven me into too many mountains) Pilot2ATC evaluates your IFR route and minimum safe altitudes enroute to better guide ATC during the flight. It provides approach procedures to use while flying. It provides a moving map so I can see items of interest in the area I am flying. Some of the editor functions are: Add special effects Edit material settings Minimize amount of drawcalls. It all depends on wether the features are worth it for you. Pilot2ATC supports MSFS, FSX, P3D and X-Plane.
